Monkeypox (hMPXV) is a topical zoonotic disease that originates from a virus that can transfer between people and animals. The name monkeypox originated from the first detected cases in west and central Africa, where the virus was found among monkeys and forest rats.

The monkeypox virus is identified by skin lesions and blisters similar to chickenpox and is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. In addition, it can also be spread through the laundry of an infected person. However, monkeypox can only be transmitted if symptoms are actively present.

Other symptoms of monkeypox include:

• Exhaustion
• Muscle pain
• Fevers
• Chills

These symptoms clear on their own within two to four weeks after primary infection.

• Do not share drinking glasses, crockery, or cutlery with someone diagnosed with monkeypox; wash dishes with hot water and dishwashing liquid.
• Practice good hygiene and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based sanitiser when you do not have access to water.
