Enzyme-based consumables that use biological processes to eliminate bacteria are finding growing favour with South African corporates wanting to increase their usage of environmentally-friendly cleaning products.
That’s according to local hygiene and related-services firm, Bidvest Steiner, which has noticed a definite trend towards clients wanting to use a mix of environmentally-friendly and traditional cleaning consumables at their corporate sites.
“Enzymes are biological molecules so they can cleanly eliminate biological organisms such as bacteria and other pathogens. This makes hygiene consumables based on natural enzyme action perfectly-suited for use in corporate bathrooms and elsewhere within the enterprise,” said Rika van Rooyen of Bidvest Steiner.
The efficiency of enzyme-based cleaning products is determined by the application for which they are used. “While enzyme-based consumables are effective when it comes to controlling odor, for example, they must be fit for purpose. They cannot be used when the offending substance is artificially-based, for example, motor oil or synthetic grease,” says Ms Van Rooyen.
Enzymes are essentially biological compounds that help speed up the break-down of organisms. They are made using very specific enzymes that reduce biological substances such as fats, oils and proteins into harmless elements including oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon.
“Within corporate bathrooms and kitchen areas, Bidvest Steiner is delivering excellent results for clients by using enzyme-based cleaners to get rid of the proteins that stain toilets, tubs, sinks, and countertops along with any lingering odors caused by bacteria. Even fuzzy-looking mold and mildew stains, which are actually collections of microscopic organisms, can be easily killed by an enzyme-based mold remover,” explained Ms Van Rooyen.
As enzymes are biological molecules, they can sometimes take several hours or days to eliminate bacteria. However, their advantage is that they do this cleanly and without any adverse environmental effects. They should also never be mixed with artificial soap or detergents. That being said, their environmentally-friendly nature means they have a definite role to play within the arsenal of consumables we have available to fight grime, pathogens and bacteria within the workplace,” concluded Ms Van Rooyen.
