Top 5 Cleanest Cities in Africa

14 March 2018

When it comes to hygiene, the perceptions on Africa are less than desirable. This can be argued as we have some of the cleanest cities in the world. We’ve taken the time to compile an overview of these cities. A clean city is one that gives its citizens a sense of pride and makes a positive contribution to their overall health.

Ifrane, Morocco

This city is known for its gorgeous alpine-esque architecture and skiing resorts and it is probably the coldest in Africa during Winter. It has been named one of the most cleanest cities in the world. Ifrane has been praised for the quality of its water sources (waterfall lake and rivers filled with fresh fish), their national park and fresh air. One of the major contributors to its clean air is the fact that there are no industrial plants so there is very little pollution.

Windhoek, Namibia

With the use of innovation, this city has adopted affordable ways to get the community involved in the reuse, collection and removal of solid waste. Despite the worst drought Windhoek has ever experienced in 1996, the city’s management handled this by building three water reuse reservoirs and other efforts.

Cape Town, South Africa

Despite the drought that the city is experiencing right now, there is no list it does not appear in when it comes to its beauty and cleanliness. These efforts are made by the Cape Town City Improvement District who also conducts crime prevention initiatives. In the 2016/15 financial year, they managed to clean, stormwater drains, replaced drain covers, removed illegal posters and graffiti. Their social division engages with street people and helps them go to homeless shelters.

Port Louis, Mauritius

Port Louis is the most populated city in Mauritius but it this does not stop this city from being the cleanest. Port Louis is the country’s economic, political and cultural center. Popular for its historical treasures, the monuments and historical buildings, this city is under the administration of the Municipal City Council of Port Louis. The city council’s Public Health department sees to it that the city is kept clean. Visitors enjoy the central market, other historic sites like the Champ de Mars which is the oldest racecourse in the southern hemisphere.

Gaborone, Botswana

The Gaborone City Council (GCC) sure puts in the work to keep this capital city clean. Gaborone is one of the cities that always comes up on lists of Africa’s cleanest cities. The GCC runs cleanup campaigns which include residents partaking in keeping the city clean. This city is the urban center that has been developing gradually since Botswana gained independence in 1966.
